Vintage Ikea swivel chair

The Nevil chair is one of Niels Gammelgaard’s lesser-known but highly interesting IKEA designs from the 1990s. Designed in 1993 for IKEA, it reflects the period when Scandinavian designers were exploring new possibilities with injection-moulded plastics and lightweight industrial production.

It represents IKEA’s transition from the metal-heavy aesthetic of the 1970s and 1980s toward the playful plastics of the 1990s.
The translucent polypropylene versions feel very much of their era, echoing the broader fascination with transparent materials that would become popular later in the decade. The chair was designed by one of IKEA’s most influential collaborators, whose work helped define the company’s visual identity from the 1970s through the early 2000s.
